Pool heater not heating? Start with the symptoms.
A heater that will not start and one that runs without warming the water need different conversations. Record what you can see on the normal control display before requesting a diagnosis. An error message is useful context, but it does not establish which part needs replacement.
Identify gas heating or a heat pump first
A gas heater burns natural gas or propane; an air-source heat pump moves heat from the air into the water. Pentair notes that heat-pump performance depends on air temperature and humidity. Record the type, model, outdoor conditions and normal display rather than treating slow heating as the same fault across both systems. Gas, combustion, refrigerant and electrical diagnosis require the relevant qualified professional.
The heater will not start
Note the displayed temperature, selected pool or spa mode, requested temperature, and exact message. Record whether you asked for heat through the heater controls or a separate automation app. Pentair documents an automation-control distinction for its MasterTemp models; other equipment has its own instructions.
It starts, stops, or leaves the water cold
Write down when it stops, whether a message appears, and whether the circulation pump is operating. Include the heater type: gas, electric resistance, or heat pump. These observations help a qualified technician choose the appropriate tests; they are not a remote diagnosis.
There is a gas smell or another safety concern
Leave the area if you suspect a gas leak and contact your gas supplier or emergency service from a safe location. Follow the heater's safety instructions. Do not attempt ignition, gas adjustments, electrical work, or a safety-switch bypass to make the heater run.

- Describe the last normal heating cycle and any recent changes to controls or other pool equipment.

Understand the proposed work
Ask the technician to explain the observed fault and the test that supports the proposed repair. A repair-versus-replacement decision should consider the diagnosed component, equipment condition, compatible parts, warranty coverage, and installation scope. There is no reliable universal price or age cutoff for every heater.
